A six-pack plus one to try for Fourth of July

Sun’s out, guns out. Eh, maybe not.

But, as we look to celebrate our independence on July 4 and the mercury nears its peak, a few staples quickly come to mind, including our favorite topic around here: beer.

As someone who admittedly steers towards IPAs and stouts (I mean, who doesn’t?), it’s sometimes difficult for me to enjoy too many “summer” beers. I’ve gone to work and compiled a list of six seven Minnesota beers I recently enjoyed and encourage you to give them a go for the long weekend. As always, you, too, can share in the fortune of these Minnesota-made beers as they are available at all the finest off-sale joints (as well as taprooms), with the exception of Lake Monster’s Serpent Summer Ale.

And, here’s my usual general disclaimer: I’m not a cicerone. I’m just a guy who likes beer and relies on liquor stores for most of my beer. I’m not often disappointed, as you’ve no doubt seen in previous posts (and will see in this one). Maybe I’m easy to please.

Breweries featured: Take 16 Brewing Co., Blacklist Artisan Ales, Waconia Brewing, Fulton Brewing, Indeed Brewing, Insight Brewing and Lake Monster Brewing.

Take 16 Brewing Co., Luverne

  • Hayloft, hefeweizen (12-ounce bottle)

take16

A small southwestern brewery growing its footprint, Take 16 Brewing Co. launched in 2014. It’s steadily expanded its beer and operations, starting bottling in late 2015. Their beers can now be found in Mankato and beyond (I’ve seen them in Lonsdale and Northfield).

Like some of its better counterparts sprinkled throughout Greater Minnesota, Take 16 is definitely worth tracking down. All of its beers are clean and refreshing, but for a hot, summer day on the water, grab their Hayloft hefeweizen. It’s quickly become a go-to for a style I don’t usually drink.

Blacklist Artisan Ales, Duluth

  • Makrut Wit, Belgian-style wheat ale (750-ml bottle)

Here’s another brewery in the midst of growth, including opening a new taproom in downtown Duluth (aiming for opening this summer). Blacklist focuses on small batches and brews in the Belgian tradition. All Blacklist beers come in a 750-ml bomber bottles and are corked. Any decent liquor store should have a row dedicated to these guys (many do), so they’re not hard to find.

They’ve earned the shelf; Makrut Wit, made with Makrut lime leaves, popped with a smooth fruit flavor, aided by coriander and orange peel. It was a real pleaser.

Waconia Brewing, Waconia

  • Paradise Island DIPA (750-ml bottle)

Here’s another specialty offer from Waconia Brewing, which focuses mostly on taproom-only releases. This DIPA, like Waconia’s previous release, Waconiator, is a nice beer. I may have held on to this beer a little long before opening it, but the 25.9-oz bottle still opened to and poured with a great aroma, and had a nice balance to the beer upon consumption. I’m not shy to say I had no problem drinking this solo in one (short) sitting. Like its predecessor, this beer, coming in at 9.8 percent ABV and 88 IBU, has limited availability and can most easily be found in the west metro. You may want to work up to this one as your shoulders brown (or, redden, as it were).

Fulton Brewing, Minneapolis

  • War & Peace, imperial coffee stout (12-ounce bottle)

Fulton probably doesn’t need much introduction to the initiated, but for those who haven’t had the privilege to check out their lineup, their beers are ones to check out.

For me, as a break from light, crisp (and sometimes hoppy) beers, I just need to dip my toes in a stout. Look no further than the War & Peace imperial coffee stout for a change of pace as the sun dips and the air cools. Or, if you’re on the boat for fishing at dawn, have at it. It does have coffee in its name, right?

Indeed Brewing, Minneapolis

  • Shenanigans Summer Ale (12-ounce can)

Another brewery that doesn’t need an introduction. Indeed’s annual summer offering, Shenanigans, is known as a crowd pleaser and it didn’t disappoint me. It’s a light-bodied beer (5 percent ABV) that has the wheat and Indeed-favorite honey flavors coming through, aided by the lemon and orange notes. Strongly endorsed for golfing, fishing and anything else above ground.

Insight Brewing, Minneapolis

  • In the Halls of the Sunken City, saison and sauv blanc grapes (16-ounce can)

Insight Brewing is quickly gaining a reputation for sleek branding, as well as sleek beer. All four of its mainstay offerings are good, but they may not be for everyone, mostly because the “average” beer drinker may be unfamiliar with and turned off by such ingredients as sauv blanc grapes or yuzu; to those people, I say just try it, then form an opinion.

The saison, made with sauv blanc grapes, is a palate pleaser. It’ll be a refreshing beverage as your steak slowly works toward perfection.

Lake Monster Brewing, St. Paul

  • Serpent Summer Ale (taproom only)

One of the rare Minnesota breweries that had distribution before a taproom, Lake Monster has been on the market for a few years and benefited from honing in their flagship beers before throwing out a bunch of recipes. Both the Calhoun Claw Pilsener and Empty Rowboat IPA, the latter in particular, have been heralded by many and for good reason. They’re just good, easy-drinking beers.

But you should make a visit to the Lake Monster taproom (sweet space) and pick up a growler of the Serpent Summer Ale, a Belgian wheat style ale. It has a very smooth, citrusy taste. It’s good on the front and back.

Cheers!

It’s time to Let It Ride again

Just in time for the spring thaw and eventual dog days of summer, Indeed Brewing Company’s Let It Ride IPA is hitting the shelves of your favorite liquor store.

I got my hands on the release, which is reskinned this year with art from Minneapolis-based Chuck U, a frequent Indeed collaborator. It didn’t disappoint – the beer or the design.

Indeed Brewing Let It Ride IPA

The pungent smell (in a good way) and tropical taste work in unison to offer a pleasing experience, a good balance for a new approach to the beer.

“There’s a bunch of aroma in these new varieties of hops that we weren’t getting from hops even a few years ago,” said Josh Bischoff, Indeed head brewer. “Expect big fruity aromas containing, but not limited to, dank citrus, pineapple, blueberry and tropical fruits.”

Indeed you should. I did. Now, I’m far from a cicerone, so you don’t have to take my word from it. Head out and pick up a six-pack to check it out for yourself.

Also for a limited time, you can find Let It Ride packaged in a special six-pack with Let It Roll, Indeed’s winter IPA offering. It is, indeed, hard to go wrong here.

Indeed Brewing Mexican Honey Imperial Lager

The Indeed Brewing Mexican Honey Imperial Lager is in a league of its own, especially among other summer beers. While honey lager conjures images of straw-colored beer in a clear bottle with or without a lime sticking out, imperial leads to thoughts of viscous, motor-oil like substances. Somewhere in the middle, and containing elements of each, is this unique flavor bomb.

Indeed Brewing Mexican Honey Imperial LagerWith aggressive honey character from start to finish and just enough alcoholic heat to get its point across, the Indeed Brewing Mexican Honey Imperial Lager will probably take you by surprise.

First, the Mexican orange blossom honey doesn’t add much sweetness. In fact, this beer is very dry and even mildly bitter in the finish. The dry finish allows the honey to come through, in contrast to one of Indeed’s other honey beers, the LSD, in which which the honey simply reads as “sweet”.

Furthermore, the orange on the nose is accompanied by a pleasant fruity-grape note and the malt delivers a graham cracker element — a very intriguing combination.

Mark Joseph, off-premise account manager, explains that the beer would age very well. “We just tried one that was a year old, the honey still came through. It was great.” With that, he took me back to the barrel room, where the Mexican Honey Imperial Lager is sitting in Don Julio Anejo tequila barrels. The aging brew will become Mexican Cousin in early 2015.

Worth the wait? I have no doubt. But for now try the Mexican Honey, available at the taproom and in bottles next week.

Last Minute Holiday Gift Ideas for Beer Lovers

You should probably have all your holiday season shopping done already. It’s cool, nobody here is judging. Life is busy, you’re busy. The important thing is that you finally have your act together and you’re on the ball now. We are here to help you on your quest with some last minute holiday gift ideas for beer lovers in your life.

For the Local Craftbeer Lover

Some beer nerds swear by only local brew. Good. Drinking local helps grow our Minnesota beer culture, and keeps Minnesota brewing. After all, the further away a beer is brewed, the longer it takes to get to your lips. 612Brew is currently offering a Living Social deal. The NE Mpls Brewery gives you a flight of beer to share, 2 pints of beer of your choice and 2 signature pint glasses for $16.

If holiday beer is more your target’s taste you can opt for the Indeed Brewing Old Friend gift box. Available only in the taproom, you’ll get 1 bottle of Old Friend, 2 Indeed Pint glasses and 1 Indeed decal for $9.99! That is steal any time of year.

For the Home Brewer

brewers unionHomebrewing is like any other hobby. You can always expand your setup to include the latest and greatest gizmo or doohickey. This is ALWAYS the case with homebrewing. Basic entry into the hobby is pretty easy with a deluxe kit that includes everything needed to make great beer at home.

If the brewer in your life already has everything they need you can give them the gift that gives back, a recipe kit. Give them a recipe kit for a beer YOU want to drink, they’ll pretty much be honor-bound to give you some when it is ready. Win-win.

Liquor is Quicker

Cupa RocksOK, I concede, not everyone wants beer. Some people are more into liquor and spirits. I’ve actually been exploring the world of Rye Whiskey myself lately.

Red Envelope has a whole section dedicated to keeping your bar functional and stylish. A personalized leather wrapped flask, or a set of crystal glasses designed to let the spirits “breath” should do the trick.

If your liquor lover is into bourbon, you can stop into Liquor Boy Wine & Spirits in St. Louis Park, and get them a personalized bottle of Knob Creek. They will be engraving bottles Knob Creek on Friday, Dec 19th, from 4pm-7pm. Have it engraved with a personal message. But keep it clean, will you? Santa is watching.

Northbound Brewpub & Indeed Brewing Make National Television Debut

beer geeks tvMinnesota breweries Northbound Brewpub and Indeed Brewing Company make their national television debut on beer Geeks TV late Saturday night.

If the name Beer Geeks TV sounds familiar, it should. The syndicated television show has its roots right here in Minnesota. In fact, in its first incarnation the show focused almost entirely on Minnesota breweries and restaurants. The newest version of the show travels the country instead of the state, and replaces local talent with master brewer Michael Ferguson as the jovial host. The format remains mostly the same, but the shows is now produced by David Page, of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives fame.

The only Minnesota-centric episode centers on Hot Box, an Imperial Smoked Porter that Northbound brewed in collaboration with Indeed Brewing Company.

“We’re thrilled to be one of the first Minnesota breweries featured on Beer Geeks TV,” said Northbound Smokehouse Co-Owner and General Manager Amy Johnson. “Having recently celebrated our first birthday, it’s quite an honor to receive national attention. We’re also thrilled to share the spotlight with our good friends at Indeed Brewing.

The episode will be broadcast live at 12:30 am on Nov. 10 on WFTC/MyFox 29. Northbound Smokehouse is inviting the public to watch the episode at the restaurant. They are extending their late night Saturday happy hour with $3 house beers from 10 pm to 2 am. To honor the collaboration with Indeed Brewing, Northbound Smokehouse will also offer a partial “tap takeover” with several special Indeed Brewing beers along with Northbound’s house offerings.

For those unable to attend the late-night screening, Northbound Smokehouse will host two additional screenings on Nov. 10 at 11:00 am and again at 7:00 pm.

Indeed Brewing Now Selling Growlers

Indeed GrowlerAs a result of the progress made during the last legislative session, Indeed Brewing is selling growlers. Indeed never intended to sell growlers because they planned on meeting the 3,500 bbl limited very early early on in their production plans.

Thanks to the Save the Growler movement effort organized by the Minnesota Brewer’s Association, the 3,500 bbls limit has been upped to 20,000 bbls. Matt Schwandt covered the issue here in Minnesota Growlers Saved For Some, For Now.

Now, If we could fix the universal branding issue, we can leave the growler rules alone for a while.
