Four Firkins will be hosting Roger Reinert, DFL Senator from Duluth in the store from 5-8pm. Roger is partnering with Minnesota Beer Activists and a coalition of liquor stores to help promote and discuss the issue of Sunday Sales in Minnesota. He will ultimately author the bill to propose sales for liquor stores on Sunday. Join us for a night to meet Roger and ask questions about the proposal for opening up Sunday sales.
This Saturday, at Darkness Day, Surly Brewing Company will debut a brand-new beer called Brett Liquor IPA. Described as a “Belgian style Imperial IPA fermented with Brettanomyces and dry-hopped with Styrian Goldings. 8.3% ABV.”
*Update
Brewer Todd Haug confirmed via Twitter that 30bbls of the special beer had been brewed specifically for Darkness Day.
I have always wondered why nobody has ever started a brewery in the beautiful “untapped” market of Rochester, MN. I always figured that with plenty of people and lots of restaurants, a local brewery would fit in nicely in Rochester. Well, it looks like that day might finally be coming.
Donovan Sietz is starting Kinney Creek Brewery in the town that Mayo built. But, starting a brewery is not cheap, so he is looking to the community to contribute to his kickstarter campaign. Brewery Kickstarters make sense, right? If you want some locally brewed beer, you can throw a little money that way and help make sure it happens.
Kickstarter fundraisers are becoming the “it” way to raise money for local breweries. Bemidji Brewing had great success, so did Lucid Brewing, and Hayes Public House has almost reached its $5,000 goal.
Check out the info below on the rewards. They have cool stuff like coozies, growlers, and special brews. These rewards are all very nice, but getting to taste Kinney Creek brews like Mega Mocha Stout, Smoked Porter, and Honey Blonde will be the best reward of all.
Summit Brewing Company just announced the release of Old 152, the eleventh beer produced in its limited-time-only Unchained Series. Old 152 was created by brewer Eric Harper, who also crafted the fourth Unchained beer, Belgian Style Golden Ale. It will be available in draught and bottles the week of Oct. 22.
“This Unchained beer is based on Kentucky Common, a popular beer style in and around Louisville pre-prohibition,” said Harper. “The style disappeared after prohibition in favor of the lagers that we’re familiar with today. Old 152 will feature Cluster hops, one of the only hop varieties available in the U.S. in the late 1800s and early 1900s.”
Unchained 11 is named Old 152 after the official steam engine of the state of Kentucky. The beer pours a chestnut color with a slight haze and exhibits flavors of biscuit, toast and rye. Kentucky Common beers traditionally feature a “sour mash,” also used in the process of making another Kentucky staple: bourbon. Old 152 itself will not be sour but will feature crisp, caramel notes and a clean bitterness.
Old 152 Specs:
AVB: 5.8%
IBU: 55
Color: Chesnut
Hops: Cluster, Northern Brewer (Dry hopped: Cluster)
Malts/Grains: Pale Malt, Victory®, Crystal Medium, Rye Malt, Distillers Malt, White Wheat, Maize

Flat Earth Brewing Co. is looking to move, move on up to a bigger space. One of the potential spaces it is looking at is the old Hamm’s Brewery. The old brewery has seen better days, but isn’t beyond repair. With some financial help from the city Flat Earth could have the historic building churning out local beer from St. Paul’s east side.
In a news release, DEED said the St. Paul grant would help the city close a deal to bring Flat Earth Brewing Co. and a commercial kitchen to the city-owned property at 707 E. Minnehaha Ave., creating 48 new jobs
