Senate liquor omnibus tabled

If you are into policy or have some time to kill you can watch the entire reading here.

No go for local option

Senator Jeremy Miller (R), introduced an amendment to allow a local opt-in for Sunday liquor sales. He stressed the importance for border communities that lose business across state lines. Senator Metzen suggested that such a bill be heard in his commerce committee first, of course this is a bill that he chose not have heard earlier in the session.

Full repeal falls short

Senator Brandon Peterson (R) offered an amendment for full repeal of Sunday sales. It is worth clicking the link above to listen to him talk about the issue. Senator Peterson clearly realizes The Volstead Act is dead and it is time to put a final nail in the coffin.

Sunday growlers pass

Senator David Osmek (R) offered an amendment reintroducing Sunday growlers into the omnibus liquor bill. That was stripped from the bill in Senate Taxes the previous day.

“This is a pro-business, jobs vote that everyone should be on board with,” he said. “We should be helping, not hurting, small businesses. They want to be open on Sunday.”
MPR – May 6, 2014

Several rose to speak on the matter including Senator Dave Thompson and Senator Julianne Ortman, both called into question the matter in which the provision was removed and the short public notice.

No soup for you

“They’re likely to get nothing out of this session,” said Bakk, DFL-Cook. “That’s a decision that they’ll have to make, whether the growlers are worth losing the Sunday taproom sales.”
MPR – May 6, 2014

The amendment was adopted, restoring Sunday sales to the Senate liquor omnibus. There was brief rejoicing until the bill author, Senator Metzen (D), had the bill tabled.
Will be updated with official votes.

The tabled omnibus liquor bill could have serious implications beyond small Minnesota craft brewers. The bill includes language for everyone from the Viking the Minnesota microdistillers.
