The foundation of Jillian’s country-esque, classically trained songwriter-style musicianship was built on northern Minnesta’s Iron Range. Under the talented eye of Helina Pakola, who has since moved her music school (Evergreen School of Performing Arts) to Edina, MN, Jillian fell in love with singing at age 4, violin at 7, and performance at age 8. She’s been working hard to perfect her art ever since.
In her youth, Jillian shared her love of music and performance by taking the stage with a number of groups, including:
The Singing Strings
Range Country Show
East Range Community Orchestra
Minnesota All-State Orchestra
Wanting to take her talent to the next level, Jillian enrolled in the music program at St. Cloud State University in 2003. She received her Bachelor of Arts (Violin, Music) in 2006. Serving as the Concert Mistress for both the St. Cloud State University and Chamber Orchestras and playing with other area orchestras, Jillian maximized her connection to music while studying.
The ultimate reward for years of passionate pursuit of something as magical as music is the ability to give back. In January of 2011, Jillian opened her music school, The Music Lab, with friend and fellow musician, Josie Schmitt. Located in Minneapolis’ Nakomis neighborhood, Jillian actively teaches voice, violin and viola youth and adult lessons.
When she’s not teaching or writing Jillian shares her music on stage with several local bands, including:
The Killer Hayseeds (pop-country)
Corpse Reviver (early American folk, bluegrass)
Supertet (string quartet)
Steve Kaul & The Brass Kings (American roots)
Brian Just Band (’60’s California Pop)
Additionally, Jillian is using her ability to fuse the timeless with the current and starting her own band, Jillian Rae. She’s representing her hard working country background on the Iron Range and adding a dose of American roots and classic rock to create a unique, housey mix of modern musicality.
